On Monday evening, May 2, 2011, John Hagee came to Fresno with his Christian’s United for Israel (CUFI) rally in a “Night to Honor Israel”. It was held at and sponsored by the Cornerstone Church in downtown Fresno. Many from both Jewish and Christian communities attended.

About 35 people of congregation Bet Shalom participated in the effort to protest and publicize John Hagee’s heretical position regarding Israel to those who attended the CUFI event. We stood on the street corners and sidewalks outside of Cornerstone Church with signs, handed out flyers, waved flags of Israel and the Lion of Judah, and joined in Davidic dance to Messianic music. We were met with concern, anger, rejection, acceptance, and a variety of other emotions from the people who had come to attend the event. It was a peaceful protest to John Hagee’s message of two Covenants, one covenant for the Jewish people, and another covenant for the Gentile people.

For some years there has been concern among those of the Messianic Jewish community, Church leaders, and of the leadership of Bet Shalom in particular, that the message John Hagee is espousing is Scripturally inaccurate. We have researched his messages and his latest book “In Defense of Israel” and found that he publically promotes a Dual Covenant theology.

Very simply put, “Dual-covenant theology is a Liberal Christian view that holds that Jews may simply keep the Law of Moses, because of the “everlasting covenant” (Genesis 17:13) between Abraham and God expressed in the Hebrew Bible, whereas Gentiles (those not Jews or Jewish proselytes) must convert to Christianity or alternatively accept the Seven Laws of Noah.”1

In researching Hagee’s book “In Defense of Israel”, many statements are discovered that do not agree with the Bible. In a quote from Kevin Geoffrey:

“I am prepared to throw his baby out with his bath water based solely on the content of pages 132-143.  Why?  Because by Hagee’s own confession, the “Jesus issue” appears to be the crux of the book.  This is what he says,

“This book will expose the sins of the fathers and the vicious abuse of the Jewish people.  ‘In Defense of Israel’ will shake Christian theology.  It scripturally proves that the Jewish people as a whole did not reject Jesus as Messiah.  It will also prove that Jesus did not come to earth to be the Messiah.  It will prove that there was a ‘Calvary conspiracy’ between Rome, the high priest, and Herod to execute Jesus as an insurrectionist too dangerous to live.  Since Jesus refused by word and deed to claim to be the Messiah, how can the Jews be blamed for rejecting what was never offered?”2

Now those of us who have read our Bibles know that there must be blood shed for the remission of sin. This is not man’s idea, this is God’s provision for mankind to have fellowship with Him as well as gain everlasting life. This pattern was shown in the Tabernacle of Moses in the wilderness when God established the system of community living for the Children of Israel. God gave the “Ten Commandments” on Mount Sinai. He established the Mosaic Law, as it is known today, and gave His people the “house rules” for dwelling together in community life with both God and man. God instituted the sacrificial system whereby there was provision for the “covering of sin” until the final atonement would be made by Messiah Yeshua. (Exodus 29; Leviticus chapters 4, 5, 6 & 7)

These “house rules” were given to the Children of Israel and to us today to live by but not as a means to salvation. They would be the arrow that would point us towards the Messiah Yeshua, and our need for His final sacrifice of atonement for sin, once and for all, on the Roman cross. It was there that He was crucified, slain on Passover as the Passover Lamb, for both the Jewish people and the people of the whole world.

As Yeshua said to Nicodemus, the Jewish teacher, and a high ranking member of The Sanhedrin, who came to Yeshua the Messiah at night in the famous 3rd chapter of John, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

This was said by Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah, to a Jewish scholar of that time, who was living within the context of Jewish life. If this passage did not include the Jewish people, then it did not include any of us at all.

HAGEE: “The sovereign purpose for Jesus’ life was to be a light to the Gentiles” (p. 133)

BIBLE: Matthew 15:24—But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

HAGEE: “there is not one verse of Scripture in the New Testament that says Jesus came to be the Messiah…” (p. 136)

BIBLE: John 4:25-26—The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.

HAGEE: “The Jews were not rejecting Jesus as Messiah; it was Jesus who was refusing to be the Messiah to the Jews.” (p. 140) “He refused to be their Messiah, choosing instead to be the Savior of the world.” (p 143)

BIBLE: Acts 2:36—(Peter, addressing the assembled masses of Jewish people on the Feast of Shavuot in Jerusalem in the passage of Acts 2) “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Yeshua/Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ/Messiah.”

HAGEE: “Jesus refused to produce a sign … because it was not the Father’s will, nor his, to be Messiah. (p. 138).

BIBLE: Luke 11:29—(Yeshua/Jesus was rebuking not refusing) “And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. “

Dr. Michael Brown had this to say in his article:

“Pastor John Hagee’s new book, In Defense of Israel: The Bible’s Mandate for Supporting the Jewish State (Lake Mary, Florida: Front Line, 2007), was publicized by announcements stating that the book would “shake Christian theology.” The following positions are explicitly laid out in the book:

  • The Jewish people, as a whole, did not reject Jesus as Messiah.
  • Jesus did not come to earth to be the Messiah.
  • Jesus refused by word and deed to be the Messiah.
  • The Jews cannot be blamed for not accepting what was never offered.

Statements like this must be evaluated in light of 1 John 2:22: “Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ [i.e., Messiah]. Such a man is the antichrist-he denies the Father and the Son.” As commentator Stephen S. Smalley explained, “The true believer is the one who accepts the Christhood of Jesus, whereas those who deny his messianic identity declare themselves to be on the side of the antichrist” (Word Biblical Commentary).”3

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY? Please always read the Bible in context.

Jeremiah 31:31-33—“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Matthew 23:39— (Yeshua/Jesus speaking to the multitudes, the Scribes and the Pharisees) ”… for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’” Baruch Haba BeShem Adonai! (See also Psalm 118:26; Matthew 23:39; Luke 19:38)

Luke 2:11—(speaking of Yeshua/Jesus)”For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ/Messiah the Lord.”

John 3:16—(Yeshua/Jesus speaking to Nicodemus, a man of the Pharisees and a ruler of the Jews) “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 14:6—(Speaking to His Jewish disciples, specifically Thomas) ”Yeshua/Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

John 20:30-31—”And truly Yeshua/Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples (who were ALL Jewish), which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Yeshua/Jesus is the Christ/Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”

Romans 1:16— “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ/ Messiah, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

Most will agree that Rabbi Sha’ul, also known the apostle Paul, has penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, some very beneficial books in the New Covenant portion of the Bible. Most all who will read this will know and be able to recount his story of persecuting his own Jewish people for their belief in Messiah Yeshua. Most all will remember the famous “Damascus Road” experience where Sha’ul/Paul was confronted by the living God of Israel:

“Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me.  And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Yeshua/Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’’’(Acts 22:6-8)

Then years later in 1 Timothy 1:12-15, Rabbi Sha’ul/Paul writes to Timothy:

“And I thank Messiah Yeshua/Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Messiah Yeshua/Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Messiah Yeshua/Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”

No matter what seemingly great work a man (or woman) does for the Nation of Israel, if we accept any part of  Dual Covenant Theology, and if we support and follow after those who do, then we condemn the Jewish people to an eternity without God. Will we neglect so great a salvation to those we have been called to pray for and serve by denying the inerrant Word of God that speaks of salvation to BOTH the House of Israel and the Nations?
